Erykah Badu said that the main theme of the song is how Africans were brought to America and forced to change their culture.
Another theme is a single woman that isn’t looking for love, and can do bad by herself. And occasionally a man comes by trying to make her believe that she needs him, but she wakes up and realizes she doesn’t need him there to be complete.
And third, in the song’s most literal sense the song is about a woman that is out on a casual date with a man, and when she isn’t paying attention he slips a ‘Micky Finn’ (Date Rape Drug) into her drink. Earlier he wasn’t touching her, but “Now you wanna kiss me”.
