Actually, it was a song originally sung by Roberta Flack that gained new life when it was covered by the Lauryn Hill and The Fugees.
In the song, a performer singing to an audience uses lyrics so smooth and steamy that the protagonist, or the person singing Killing Me Softly, becomes affected on a very personal level. Soft sounds having a harsh effect.
As such, this lyric plays off of that, by transcending soft and less noticeable effects, the virus grows into a full blown attack on the systems of the infected.
