I turn my head to the East
I don't see nobody by my side
I turn my head to the West
Still nobody in sight
So I turn my head to the North
Swallow that pill that they call pride
That old me is dead and gone
But that new me will be alright
Justin is talking about old-school hip-hop with its East Coast-West Coast battles. Because of them 2Pac, among other great rappers who represented the West, is dead. Biggie, among other great rappers who represented the East, is also dead. The whole message of the song is to warn against gang fights, fights over stupid things that still get people killed. If Pac and Big had never gotten into a “beef” many real rappers might never have been killed.
To turn one’s head to the North is to look to the sky — towards God. He humbles himself and prays, because he can’t carry on on his own
He doesn’t look to the South because he’s already there— and, in fact, reigns as its king.
