Never repeat him, never repeat him

from Kanye West (Ft. Jay Z) – New Day Lyrics on Rap Genius

Is there any significance in the phrase “never repeat him” being repeated? We’ll leave that up to you…

one way to interpret the repetition here (other than the obvious word play) is to think about it in relation to the raw emotion of the song, particularly the song’s last lines. Jay-Z, as his critics often point out, is usually quite emotionally guarded. But these lines read almost like a hopeful plea, but a plea to himself. It’s almost like he’s trying to will himself to not be the shitty father that his dad was; in the same way people will themselves to do things all the time to do things that they fear they can’t (“I think I can, I think I can”), repeating himself seems to be a way to do this, to make sure he doesn’t turn his kids into the same victim (a fatherless child) that he was.
