All the street lights, glowing
Happen to be just like moments, passing
In front of me
So I hopped in the cab and
I paid my fare
See I know my destination, but I'm just not there
The meaning of the street lights takes on a slightly new meaning now. Kanye has passed many of them already, but he wants more. Because he hasn’t reached his destination yet. So he hops in the cab again, pays his fare and hopes he gets there. The repetition here is important as much of the song deals with the repetitiveness of his ambition.
“Paying his fare” symbolises the endless hours of work he has put in to get to where he is now. Nevertheless, he knows there is still a lot more hard work to come.
