Song: Empire State of Mind

Artist: Jay-Z

Lyrics

If Jeezy's paying LeBron, I’m paying Dwyane Wade

Explanation

In the song “24-23”, Young Jeezy repeats the line “I used to pay Kobe [Bryant], now I pay Lebron [James]”

Bryant’s number is 24, Lebron’s is 23 — Jeezy used to pay $24,000 for a kilo of cocaine, now he pays $23k, but Jay-Z pays only $3k (3 being Dwayne Wade’s number)

But is it really possible that Jay pays 10% of what Jeezy pays? Logic of free markets says: no! This is a preposterous hyperbole, only serving to draw attention to the fact that Jay-Z is a middle-ager who hasn’t sold drugs for decades

What Jay-Z should have said was: “If Jeezy’s paying Lebron, I’m paying Carmelo”; this rendition would have allowed Jay to keep Jeezy’s first name consistency, resulted in a more credible boast ($15K), and — perhaps most importantly — “Carmelo” rolls pleasingly off the tongue
