Five and five will tell you it's hopeless out there on the avenue
But if they really knew the truth...why would they tell you?
“Five and five” is a common radio communication phrase meaning everything is okay. Here, it refers to the mainstream media, such as talk news radio or TV nightly news, always reporting bad news about inner-city Black communities and making it seem as if the ghettos are doomed and irredeemable. GSH is saying that, because the mainstream media and local TV stations both believe that Black communities are crime-ridden and dangerous and as part of the status quo power structure (a.k.a. ‘The Man’) want Black gangs to make that belief into a reality, there’s no reason that Black youth should trust these news sources.
