These kids clearly came from different backgrounds but they ere unified with their common love for skateboarding. This can also refer to other things besides skateboarding. Lupe’s genius mind thought that simply saying that some were rich and other poor was boring so he use the fathers as a way to show the range of social class.
Funny thing is even with the drastic difference in their fathers class, the previous line shows that all the fathers had abandoned their sons.
