Daydreamin’ Lyrics

[Hook: Jill Scott]
Daydream
I fell asleep beneath the flowers
For a couple of hours
What a beautiful day
Daydream
I dream of you amid the flowers
For a couple of hours
Such a beautiful day
Daydream
I fell asleep beneath the flowers (I fell asleep beneath the flowers)
For a couple of hours
Such a beautiful day
Daydream
I dream of you amid the flowers
For a couple of hours
Such a beautiful day

[Outro]
(Dream, dream)
(Dream, dream)
(Dream, dream)

About

Genius Annotation

On a cool summer’s day, Lupe Fiasco kicks back and dreams of skyscraper robots and stereotypical rap videos. The first verse was inspired by his father, an engineer, who told Lupe as a child that if you put all Chicago’s city buildings together they would form a giant robot. Lupe then uses satirical parody for the bulk of the second verse, which describes many of the stereotypes surrounding modern Hip Hop culture.

“Daydreamin'” won the 2008 Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance. Interestingly, Lupe was sick with pneumonia on the day of the awards and couldn’t receive it in person. Rather, it was sent to his lawyer who had it for the next 9 years until Lupe and his Grammy were finally reunited on his way to a show in Cincinnati. In an A.V. Club interview about the album, Lupe talks about his excitement over having featured artist Jill Scott on this track before it became serious:

When I went to do ‘Daydreamin’‘ with Jill Scott, I was like, hyped. 'Jill Scott is in the studio!’ She was like, ‘Whoa, calm down and tell me what you want me to do.’ [Laughs.] It was ‘Stop. This is business.’“ [She said] ‘You have to stop and tell me what you want me to do.’ Every other note or run or style I wanted her to do on the record, I had to stop and tell her to do it.
