According to the legend, before a battle against rival Emperor Maxentius (this happened in 312 BC, during the period called “Tetrarchy”, when the Roman Empire was divided in 4 different sub-areas) Constantine saw a cross or a Chi Rho in a dream, which he associated with the latin motto “In Hoc Signo Vinces” — “In this sign you conquer.” This vision was interpreted as a symbol of God’s will to be on Constantine’s side before the battle and supposedly led his army to victory.
