86 Lithonia headed to Decatur
Decatur is an Atlanta suburb with a fairly sizable black population
The 86 Lithonia or 86 L Bus runs from Lithonia towards Decatur
Decatur has always had two historic sides that are divided by Memorial Dr. On the Northeast side is the white Decatur, or North Decatur area that is prominently filled with prosperous white churches, the Dekalb Medical Center Hospital, white liberals, good schools, and is quite small. The other side of Memorial Dr. headed by Candler Rd., Glenwood, Snapfinger, and down to Rainbow is the black side. Historically, prosperous in it’s own way and time, this side languishes in a more hood reputation filled with flea markets, prostitution, young black nightclubs, one of Atlanta’s most “ghetto malls”: South Dekalb, McAfee, check-cashing spots, and liquor stores. The 86L takes you through this part of Decatur from Lithonia and drops you off at East Lake train station. The area of East Lake used to be a notorious government housing project called “Lil Vietnam” and accounted for many murders and violence in the 80s and 90s. It has since been gentrified and the property value quite high. It is in this that OutKast writes these lyrics.
