How you hold in emotion

from Wale – Illest Bitch Lyrics on Rap Genius

Wale hits on a stereotype here with elements of truth, but also troubling overtones. Black women have traditionally been portrayed in two ways — as nurturing “mammys”, concerned with the people they care for, and with hardly a thought for themselves; or as a promiscuous, lascivious Jezebel

However, a slightly newer stereotype, related to the “mammy” idea, is that of black woman as “superwoman” — selfless, hard-working, devoted to family, and unconcerned about her own comfort, just like Wale talks about here. Michelle Wallace’s classic book Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman deals with this last idea in depth
