I wanted you to know
That I am ready to go, heartbeat
My heartbeat

from Childish Gambino – Heartbeat Lyrics on Rap Genius

Meaning

This line expresses the contradictory feelings he has for the one special girl who he loves and hates the most. This is theme of the song.

These three lines play off “I’m ready to go in a heartbeat,” shortening it for rhyming sake and creating a beat with the word’s meaning of a heart beating. The first meaning means he’s ready to leave her in a heartbeat.

On the other hand, this means that he is also ready to “go” with her, or be with her, in a heartbeat, if they could ever work it out.

Far from being a hypocrite, Childish is actually a very relatable dualist.

Childish is also a romantic literalist—-this chick is also his “heartbeat,” that which keeps him alive and pumps his blood (she’s an exercise in patience, life, love, etc.) I don’t think it’s farfetched to point out the oxymoronic pun of the compound word “heartbeat,” which has a Petrarchan conceit-like flavor to it: love and violence, pain and pleasure. Much like a “cold flame,” she is a “heartbeat.”
