All their friends in NY deal crack
Mom and dad have friends back in their native NYC who didn’t get out when they did. They are suffering through the pain that they avoided by getting out.
This is a call back to the concept of “black shit versus hood shit.” Dealing crack is stereotyped as “black shit” when it is far from that, and Donald’s parents are testaments to this.
In context of the story, his parents noticed the hood culture rubbing off of Donnie when he was a child and left the Bronx so he wouldn’t end up as their friends.
