Then the sky filled with herons
(I saw the devil) in a Chrysler LeBaron
There’s more meaning to these lines than the simple light (herons)/dark (devil) juxtaposition.
Herons are also referred to as “shitepokes” — thanks to their tendency to defecate when startled. If the sky is “filled” with herons, then obviously something has happened in order to provoke this mass movement (i.e. the herons have been startled). A sky full of birds that shit when stressed = Shitstorm (e.g. Taylor Swift incident).
Or are the “herons” in reference to Gil-Scott Heron, whom Kanye West uses to close off the album, and who is one of the major influences on hip-hop as a genre? In this interpretation, Gil-Scott Heron is a metaphorical “bird of light” for Kanye’s music.
So just as ‘Ye’s about to be covered in shit, he notices the devil in a car that could shelter him from it all (the devil is supposed to tempt us, so what greater temptation is there than a car in a shitstorm?), 'Ye implies that he’s being offered a ride- Yeezy’s way of justifying his sins & indulgences.
The Chrysler LeBaron part is genius, here’s why:
“Le Baron” translates to “The Baron” in French; as barons are men of nobility, Yeezy is suggesting that a ride with the devil offers power & status.
But the rank of “baron”, generally, also happens to be the lowest rank of nobility available — which suggests that the devil’s implicit promises of power aren’t as great as they seem. Plus, the idea of something being the “lowest” also makes it clear that the temptations the devil in the “LeBaron” represent are “dark” & “twisted”.
Further contributing to the notion that the devil (the embodiment of debauchery, excess, sex & drugs) is out to deceive is the fact that the LeBaron, in real life, has been the name of 6 different car models and the fact that the “LeBaron” was first manufactured as the ultimate luxury car — until 1977, when the “LeBaron” name was given to the cheapest Chrysler available (the idea of descent/downfall again). The point being that you can’t know what you’re getting into when you take a ride with the devil.
One of the cars with the “LeBaron” name was a convertible — i.e. you could get in the devil’s whip to avoid being shit on by herons, only to find that the devil pulls the roof down anyway.
There also might be some wordplay on “Chrysler”: the devil pulls up, ironically, in a “Christ-ler”!
A sky full of herons (which the Egyptians considered the “bird of light”), and the devil rolls up in a Chrysler LeBaron, the “middle manager’s convertible”.
Just an amazing scene!
