I woke up early this morning with a new state of mind
A creative way to rhyme without using knives and guns
The fact that the song as a whole deals partly with the traditionally “gangsta” for want of a better word theme of black imprisonment (in the first verse when he’s talking to his cousin in jail) the fact that it’s also such a gentle, sentimental song arguably makes the whole thing a critique of years of gunshot loaded gangsta records which claimed to only be recording the harsh reality of modern Black American experience etc. (Clearly there’s a lot of different ways to reflect the experience of drugs, crime and mass incarceration artistically.) These lines make clear that Kanye was explicitly going for such a reason. The implicit critique of ‘gangsta’ macho behavior is of course continued by the ‘you don’t have to get heated at every house-warming’ line. Note how he deflates that kind of posturing by comparing it to his aunt and uncles ordinary domestic bickering.
