In other words, teenagers think they’re cool because they go against the establishment; however, they are stuck in that realm of going against the grain. They are “shackled” into those ironic styles such as wearing “violent” green outfits until they decide to “man up.”
The protagonist, being from the generation the youth are rebelling against, does not understand their style, music, movies, etc.
