My circumstance is between Cabrini and Love Jones
Surrounded by hate, yet I love home
Common describes feeling in-between the poor (“Cabrini”, a reference to the Cabrini-Green projects) and the middle class (“Love Jones”, referencing a 1997 romantic comedy set in Chicago with two black middle class lead characters). He feels like he can relate to both the poor and the black middle class, but doesn’t feel fully a part of either.
Because of this in-between status, Common is torn about being in the ‘hood. He feels “surrounded by hate” because of the violence and fighting, but he also loves being part of the black community.
This also connects back to the previous line because in 1997, plans were made to tear down most of Cabrini-Green.
