Where Did You Sleep Last Night? Lyrics

[Chorus]
My girl, my girl don't lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night?

In the pines, in the pines where the sun don't ever shine
I will shiver the whole night through
My girl, my girl where will you go?
I'm going where the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines where the sun don't ever shine
I will shiver the whole night through

[Verse 1]
Her husband was a hard workin' man
Just about one mile from here
His head was found in the driving wheel
But his body never was found

I will shiver the whole night through
[Bridge]
My girl, my girl, where will you go?
I'm going where the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines, where the sun don't ever shine
I will shiver the whole night through

[Chorus]
My girl, my girl don't lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night?

In the pines, in the pines where the sun don't ever shine
I will shiver the whole night through
My girl, my girl where will you go?
I'm going where the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines where the sun don't ever shine
I will shiver the whole night through

Genius Annotation

A cover of a traditional folk song, sometimes called “In the Pines” or “Black Girl”. The two most famous versions (out of hundreds) are by Lead Belly and Nirvana. This version is, ahem, “influenced by” Nirvana’s reading of the song – Cudi himself even called it “a cover of a cover.” See an excellent article on the history of the song here

WZRD told Complex that the guitar on this song came about in an unusual way:

Dot: Fun fact: the guitar on there was actually recorded on a iPad

Cudi: I didn’t want to fuck it up and learn to play it right, so I just had Sean [Martin, guitarist] record the pieces and we got back to New York and we just took the pieces off my iPad and looped it up
