All I ever wanted was to pick apart the day
Put the pieces back together my way
Aesop’s one true goal is to analyze the way things are, and do what he can to make them how he wants to be. He could be referring to the rap industry, or just life in general. He wishes that he had the ability to follow his dreams by controlling the world in which he lives the way that he envisions it to be.
Aesop Rock mentions in much of his music that he struggles with life and his own mind; this track gives some kind of reference to how he sees the American and hip-hop communities and his thought on it.
At the end of the day, maybe before you fall asleep, you might think about what you could’ve done differently. You could have handled each situation differently, so you may regret things you did or didn’t do.
This sentiment fits with the theme of the song and album which consists of reflections and musings of a writer working in a shitty 9-5 job (see: “9-5ers Anthem”).
This interpretation also fits in with the themes of “Nightlight”, in which he says that all he wanted to do was consume everything that he observes and spit it back at his species — a much darker take on this refrain.
