Could be referring to a couple of things:
Asking us to make a stand, the assassins are after him for speaking up for equality.
Not killing in a literal sense. He is not afraid to die as a result of spreading the message. He is afraid that the message will die with his death. He needs the repressed legion of followers to continue on even after his death; just how the civil rights movement continued after the death of MLK and still continues today.
