Zombie, zombie, zombie, where do dreams come from?
Monáe compares the citizens of Metropolis to zombies, in that that are walking dead, a theme that she explores again in “Sincerely, Jane” (see the chorus). They are able to live their lives, though they do so without any free will. Monáe wonders how anyone could dream in this society where dreaming is so explicitly not tolerated.
