It's the year of the landshark
Dry as sand, parched, damn get these men some water
They're out there being slaughtered
In meaningless wars so you don't have to bother
And can sit and soak the idiotbox trying to fuck their daughters
from Aesop Rock – 9-5'ers Anthem Lyrics on Rap Genius
Meaning
Here, Aes connects consumerism, the exploitation of the working class, and warfare.
The worker is stuck in a meaningless war just so consumers can have comforts and conveniences and indulge in middle class existence, watching tv and scamming on girls.
This passage can also be read as being literally about war—soldiers fight to protect our “freedoms”—but really our freedoms are just sitting around and being lazy pieces of shit.
