Engine, Engine, Number Nine
On the New York transit line
A reference to the song “Engine Number 9” by Roger Miller.
“Engine, Engine Number 9,
Comin down the railroad line”
The most recent usage of the 9 line MTA Subway designation was as a skip-stop service to complement the 1 local on the IRT Broadway–7th Avenue Line. That service was discontinued completely on Tuesday, May 31, 2005 including the peak-hour service that had run since 1994.
