Rose is a type of flower associated with beauty. The name Rose is also associated with a girl who is beautiful and with a sweet personality.

Life is a beautiful thing but there are a lot of bad things going on. This can be said for all situations, states, and sensations as well. Lupe has always talked about the duality of life and things in life, and he has a great sense of balance. In fact, his first album — Food & Liquor expresses that balance for the food represents the good, and the liquor represents the bad.

1st & 15th is Lupe’s record label. It alludes to the days of the month when people get their welfare checks. It’s good that people get money then, but it’s bad that they have to rely on so little and struggle in the meantime.

I get the term Dirty Rose as a metaphor for that duality of good and bad that surrounds us. Lupe and his fellow rappers talk about it in their songs, and that’s what their label represents.

Also, a Dirty Rose may refer to a person who’s been able to do good but comes from a bad background. Like, Lupe and the rest of his label mates are from the hood which is associated with drug dealing and all sorts of criminal acts. Some pretentious people are aware that Lupe is a highly capable person, but the fact that he comes from the hood makes them judge him because of it. 2Pac has a poetry book named “The Rose That Grew From Concrete”, a title that refers to the same situation.
