El-P uses imagery related to the Lord of the Flies to create a metaphor about the music industry, without it all of the beefs and rap tribes would blow up in primal violence. Money might be corrupting the art, but it’s also parenting a lot of adolescent boys who fancy themselves thugs.

Also, when Simon speaks to the Lord of the Flies in the book, he notes it’s dead eyes and their mesmerizing effect: “Simon’s head wobbled. His eyes were half closed as if he were imitating the obscene thing on the stick….”
