My fingertips and my lips
They burn from the cigarettes
While smoking, the butts of cigarettes get hot when a drag is taken, often burning lips and hands.
This line is relevant to the “Forrest Gump” theme because Forrest Gump hates cigarettes and the taste of tobacco. This is proven in the movie when Forrest’s military lieutenant, Lieutenant Dan, set Forrest up for sex with a prostitute. While kissing her, Forrest threw her off of him, causing the girl and her friend to leave Forrest and his old lieutenant. Forrest apologized to Lieutenant Dan with a notable quote from the movie:
I’m sorry I ruined your New Year’s Eve party, Lieutenant Dan. She tasted like cigarettes.
With Frank portraying a woman with cigarette burnt lips, Forrest runs right past her while she is still thinking about him.
Smoking cigarettes is also known as stress relief. We could then assume that the speaker Frank (not Frank portraying a woman, but Frank himself) is feeling stressed at the thought of his so-called “Forrest Gump” enough to drive him to smoke cigarettes heavily.
