Gopher Guts are very small so the term also refers to an insignificant amount of bravery.
Aesop explained that even though he loves throwing temper tantrums, he knows he has to “own up to being a piece of shit”. Owning up to his emotional distance from family and loved ones should not take a lot of guts.

Something that children would sing at camps, with their friends and family, etc. Given that the first verse is about his increasing isolation from his family,I think Aesop is deliberately inverting the childish theme that the content implies with the very adult feeling of a hangover.
