This section of the tune points out the range of associations that the word “gay” has to children, who may not even associate it with sex. Later in the tune, he decries using the word “gay” pejoratively.
These lines also serve to let the audience know that Macklemore is an ally, not actually LGBTQ himself, lest there was confusion.
