Trying to make a dollar out of 15 cents
This oft-used phrase refers to the mythical optimum profit-margin for a crack dealer. 15 cents is the sum of a dime and a nickel, i.e., a dime bag and a nickel bag.
However, in the article “Why Crack Dealers Live With Their Mothers”, famed “freakonomist” Stephen Dubner finds that crack dealers do not, in fact, make nearly so much money…so better find another hustle!
Also, this line was originally used by Grandmaster Flash in his early 80s song “New York, New York.”
