You hear that? What Gil Scott was hearing
A reference to famous soul musician and poet Gil Scott Heron. The above two lines, speaking about the effects of crack on Black America and racism issues was a large topic for Heron.
Hearing and heron are both used as homophones (two words that sound the same and mean different) in this verse.
Heron sampled Kanye’s Flashing Lights for his On Coming From A Broken Home record off his 2010 album I’m New Here. Kanye has sampled Heron’s songs (in My Way Home, which is also on Late Registration) and his spoken word poetry (in the later Who Will Survive In America?).
