Stakes are high, like my uncle is
We both got problems, he never confronted his
Under the bridge I wrote, some shit to stay afloat

from Common (Ft. Vinia Mojica) – Time Travelin' (A Tribute to Fela) Lyrics on Rap Genius

Meaning

A nice nod to De La Soul’s classic Stakes is High album, on which Common appeared on the track “The Bizness”.

While his uncle uses drugs to relieve his stress, Common elects to write rhymes. “Under the Bridge” is a Red Hot Chili Peppers song which deals with a time when vocalist Anthony Kiedis felt that his sobriety was distancing him from the rest of the band. In the song, Kiedis expresses that the city of Los Angeles is his only companion. Similarly, Common’s sobriety is distancing him from his uncle and he is finding companionship with his rhymes.
