First of all, who's your A&R?
A mountain climber who plays an electric guitar?
But he don't know the meaning of dope
When he's looking for a suit-and-tie rap that's cleaner than a bar of soap
At a record label, an A&R (Artists and Repertoire) is a person that looks for new talent to sign to the label and develops that talent once a deal with the label has been made
GZA has a problem with these people usually being lame white dudes that don’t know which rappers are “dope” (hot in the streets)
On censored versions of this track, instead of bleeps, a guitar chord is used to drown out expletives. GZA could be implying that this guitar is being played by an A&R who wants a cleaner rap.
The fact that he’s a mountain climber accents the A&R’s whiteness. But in Africa, lots of black dudes climb Kilimanjaro
In the “Wu-Tang Clan Manual” liner notes, a comment on the line “A mountain climber who plays an electric guitar?” adds “That’s some definitive white-boy shit.”
