- The skies of New York are gray much of the time, due to the heavy population and the pollution and the pollution that sprouts from it.This shade reminds Rae of the heroin he pushes, which varies from brownish, to gray, to white.
- This also really alludes to the Elijah Muhammad (nation of Islam leader) statement saying that the true color of the sky is grey, not blue. Blue being an untrue color.
- It might be a stretch, but Rae could also be referring to a Gray Heron bird. Bird being slang for drugs, which have the same color.
