I remember, in the kitchen, when we'd come in after school
there'd be another masterpiece, a culinary jewel
When she wasn't inside cooking, making magic on the range
she would wander through seed catalogues, choosing flowers for a change
to her gorgeous, well-planned gardens, the delight of bird and bee
hidden in the back where very few of us were privileged to see
the beauty she created with God's flowers, short and tall
the artist that was in her -that we never saw at all
Of course, we were just youngsters, and with maturity would see
the beauty she created, for us all - and it was free
By the time she gets to Heaven, all the Angels will rejoice
(though she is a wee bit feisty, and is vocal with her choice)
Whether politics or flowers, she'll not take the middle stance
and would butt heads with the devil - and he'd never have a chance
to get a word in edgewise (a bit opinionated? Maybe!)
but if I could see her up in Heaven, I'll tell you what I think I'd see:
A garden starting at the Gates, she'd tend with care and love
(although I wouldn't put it past her to disagree with Him above)
about the kinds of flowers she should plant and where they'd grow the best
(after all, in life - outspoken, and in death - she could be no less!)
But it wouldn't be "her" Heaven if she couldn't have her say
so I guess He'd have to humor her if he wanted her to stay
for He'll never find another for whom the flowers want to grow
(besides Himself, of course, but he's so busy as you know)
Yes, she would create such beauty that God could not ignore
like she did on earth, before she left, but wouldn't, any more
