Drake mentioned Aventura back in The Motto. Looks like he’s making good on his namedrop here.

Reference to the film The 6th Man. In it, a college basketball player is helped from beyond the grave by his dead brother, who’s shown in the film as an angel. When he receives his brother’s help, his team goes on to win the NCAA Championships and become #1.

God’s saying that no matter what position you’re in, everybody wants to be number one.

This “God!” resembles Kanye on “Black Skinhead”.

A clever line: God wants to be martyred at the peak of his power and influence. When God (Jesus) grew too powerful and influential, he was killed.

This is just the first track of the introductory EP Before the Bible. There’s a lot more coming. Here he’s just introducing himself, letting you get used to his style, letting himself into your mind.

@Ben
Hi, this is Chadwick. I created and annotated this song. The use of “Mine is” is mimicking antiquated/Biblical language (“Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord”), something that Sufjan does frequently. This also makes sense semantically, as they’re talking about the stresses they have they have to let go in order to calm it down. Also, the official band lyric video has “mine is” (see top right).

@Jono Well, which song? “Dick”?

"Askin' him if she gonna play games / With the Super Smash..." (Childish Gambino – Heartbeat) | rejected

Help us out here, dear readers: who’s the she here? Who’s the he? This is a tricky line because it could continue the story of the friend from above or it could return to CG’s own problems (the friend or CG could be the “him,” CG’s girl or the friend’s girl could be the “she”). So what’s going on here? Suggest away!

Check out Common’s assessment of Drake here.

"Move white girls like there’s coke up my asscrack" (Childish Gambino – Bonfire) | accepted

Good suggestion, Pigg, but I think CG’s talking more about moving drugs (as in, pushing them, carrying them around safely from one place to the next) than about shitting them out. I think you’re stretching here.

"Tommy" (Cam'ron – Oh Boy) | accepted

This is a callback to the mobster line in verse 1: “Tommy’s up at the enemy,” meaning “Get your Tommy guns up and aim them at the enemy.”

"Cannons and bandanas, blammers we don't brandish" (Cam'ron – Oh Boy) | rejected

cannons, glamours

"Rock" (Cam'ron – Oh Boy) | accepted

He says “with the rock or the (boy),” meaning he’s selling freebase cocaine (crack cocaine) or powder cocaine (“boy”).

“21st century” is also a reference to “21st Century Schizoid Man” by King Crimson, which Kanye samples in this song.
