Black on Both Sides is the debut album by American rapper Mos Def aka Yasiin Bey, one-half of Black Star with Talib Kweli, released October 12, 1999.

The album features an emphasis on live instrumentation and socially conscious lyrics. In keeping with his goal of restoring hip-hop’s sociopolitical consciousness, Mos Def’s lyrics are as intelligent and thoughtfully crafted as one would expect. But he doesn’t stop there, he sings quite passably on several tracks, plays live instruments on others (including bass, drums, congas, vibraphone, and keyboards), and even collaborates on a string arrangement.

Its ambition and execution rank it as one of the best albums of 1999, and it consolidates Mos Def’s position as one of hip-hop’s brightest hopes entering the 21st century.

The album’s haunting style, defined by its evocative melodies, rugged beats, and lyrics dealing with crime and poverty in inner-city neighborhoods reflected the dark side of New York’s urban landscape in a manner that received special recognition and critical praise.

The Infamous is widely credited as a major contributor to the East Coast Renaissance. Furthermore, the album is credited with helping to redefine the sound of hardcore Hip-Hop.
