No Name #1 Lyrics

[Verse 1]
At a party he was waiting
Looking kind of spooky and withdrawn

Like he could be underwater
The mighty mother with her hundred arms
Swept all aside
I hate to walk behind
Other people's ambitions
I saw you waiting

[Bridge]
Saint-like, with your warning

[Chorus]
Leave alone
You don't belong here

[Verse 2]
Got nervous, started whistling
Every thought a ricochet
Did you notice? Well, I wondered
What's the worst thing I could say?
Froze up inside
"You remind me of
Someone's daughter," I forgot her
I forgot her name, ashamed

About

Genius Annotation

This is a song of inner struggle Elliott feels. The lyrics represent inner dialog he is wrestling with. He sees himself as someone who doesn’t belong at this event. He struggles with his desire to leave, his desire to be left alone (going as far as trying to figure out the worst thing he could say so no one will bother him), and finishing with repetitive attempts to give himself the courage to walk out.

This is not a song of depression or sadness. It is the honest fear many feel at parties. Do they belong? Are they drunk/high/messed up and just need to get away? They are somewhere they don’t want to be. And they need to get out.
