King NY Lyrics

[Frank White]
Ok, from here on, nothing goes down unless I'm involved
No blackjack no dope deals, no nothing
A nickel bag gets sold in the park, I want in
You guys got fat while everybody starved on the street
It's my turn

[Artie Clay]
You think you're gonna live long enough to spend that money, you fucking hump?

[Three Gunshots]

[Frank White]
If any of you are tired of getting ripped off by guys like that... You come with me. I'm at the Plaza Hotel
You're welcome. You're all welcome!

Genius Annotation

This skit is taken from a scene from Christopher Walken’s 1990 cult classic “King of New York.”

Walken plays Frank White, a drug lord who looks to reclaim his place in the underworld after being released from prison.

In this scene, White kills mafia boss Artie Clay, after Clay refuses to give him a percentage of his earnings.

The “King of New York” trope has become a popular one amongst NY rappers a few years after the film was released.

In 1995 The Source magazine crowned The Notorious B.I.G. “The King of New York.” The larger than life rapper then took on the alias Frank White around the same time.

Many NY rappers like Raekwon, Ghostface and Nas refuted The Source’s claim. In 1996, on “The Message,” Nas rapped “There’s one life, one love so there can only be one king.”

After Biggie was murdered in 1997, Jay Z would go on to claim the throne with his single “The City Is Mine.”
