About

Genius Annotation

Emmylou was written by Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit in tribute to the names of Emmylou Harris, June Carter, Johnny Cash, and Gram Parsons, all prominent American country stars. Upon being asked about the song First Aid Kit replied that it is about singing with someone you love, even when you might not be able to stay with that person.

Johnny Cash and June Carter were married for a long time, and while Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons were never officially a couple, apparently Harris was waiting to meet parsons in person to tell him her feelings rather than tell him over the phone. Unfortunately Parsons passed away soon after in Joshua tree inn in California.

Again drawing a connection to the famous country music couples, the song is a love song of sorts to the speaker’s own relationship. The singer addresses her struggles with their relationship but as a testament to the power of music asserts that even with their problems they can still sing together.

The music video was shot in Joshua Tree Park as a memorial to Gram Parsons.
