The title track was released as the fourth single from Control and the album’s opening track as a symbol of Janet Jackson’s independence. The album saw her professionally break away from her father Joe Jackson, who she fired as her manager going into the Control album after her first two albums failed commercially. The superstar production duo Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis were brought in to work with Janet and they helped convey her feelings into the lyrics.

The song peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped both the Dance and R&B charts in 1986. The single was certified Gold by the RIAA. The music video won a Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul or Rap Music Video in 1988.
