Deaducation Lyrics

DEADUCATION
by Jerome Law

DETROIT --- Thirty years ago, the Detroit Public School System was in fine shape. The budget was intact. Schools rarely, if ever, closed. The graduation rate was more than 80%. “Times were good. It was a simpler time; a happier time.”, my grandmother stated.
Fast-forward about twenty-five years. Dozens of schools are closed. The graduation rate has dropped below 50%. There is a deficit, and moss-covered monuments of education are seen where schools used to be. The DPS is dying, wishing for the wilt of the past. What could’ve caused this?
Like other problems within Detroit, the downfall of DPS was caused by the migration of thousands of residents out of Detroit in the latter half of the 20th century. There was less tax revenue, and less money made budgets tighter. All things were cut financially within the city government; including education. The Detroit Public School system shut down many schools. The money saved by this was not enough to pull them out the deficit. This means they are unable to sell or demolish old buildings. Abandoned buildings, tombstones of what Detroit once was, stand on every corner. This is the Deaducation.
