Brokenhearted Lyrics

[Intro: Amy Heidemann]
Oh, yeah
Uh, c'mon, yeah

[Verse 1: Amy Heidemann]
This is more than the typical kinda thing
Felt a jones in my bones when you were touching me
Uh-oh, didn't wanna take it slow
In a daze, goin' craze, I can barely think
You're replayin' in my brain, find it hard to sleep
Uh-oh, waitin' for my phone to blow

[Pre-Chorus: Amy Heidemann]
Uh-oh, yup
Now I'm here in a sticky situation
Got a bit of trouble, yup, and now I'm pacin'
Five minutes, ten minutes, now it's been an hour
I don't wanna think too hard, but I'm sour
Uh-oh, I can't seem to let you go

[Chorus: Amy Heidemann]
See, I've been waitin' all day
For you to call me, baby
So let's get up, let's get on it
Don't you leave me brokenhearted tonight
Come on, that's right
Honest, baby, I'll do
Anything you want to
So can we finish what we started?
Don't you leave me brokenhearted tonight
Come on, that's right, cheerio
[Verse 2: Amy Heidemann]
What's the time? Such a crime, not a single word
Sippin' on that Patrón just to calm my nerves
Uh-oh, poppin' bottles by the phone, oh yeah

Had me up, had me down, turned me inside out
That's enough, call me up, baby, I'm in doubt
Uh-oh, and I don't even think you know
No, no, no

[Chorus: Amy Heidemann]
See, I've been waitin' all day
For you to call me, baby
So let's get up, let's get on it
Don't you leave me brokenhearted tonight
Come on, that's right
Honest, baby, I'll do
Anything you want to
So can we finish what we started?
Don't you leave me brokenhearted tonight
Come on, that's right, cheerio, ayy

[Bridge: Amy Heidemann]
Anything you wanna do, I'll be on it too
Everything you said is like gold with a view
Business in the front, party in the back
Maybe I was wrong, was the outfit really wack?
This kinda thing doesn't happen usually
I'm on the opposite side of it, truthfully
I know you want it, so come and get it
Cheerio
[Chorus: Amy Heidemann]
See, I've been waitin' all day
For you to call me, baby (Yeah, yeah, yeah)
So let's get up, let's get on it
Don't you leave me brokenhearted tonight (Oh-oh-whoa-oh, yeah)
Honest, baby, I'll do
Anything you want to (Thing that you want)
So can we finish what we started?
Don't you leave me brokenhearted tonight (Hey!)
Come on, uh, that's right! Cheeri-cheerio

[Outro: Amy Heidemann]
When you gonna call? Don't leave me brokenhearted
I've been waiting up, let's finish what we started
Oh-oh (Oh-oh), I can't seem to let you go
Come on, that's right, cheerio, uh

Genius Annotation

Brokenhearted is the debut single off Karmin’s first EP, Hello. The song leaked over the weekend of January 30th, 2012, and so in response they released it online.

In the song, the female protagonist is waiting for her crush to call her on the phone, worried about whether he may or may not like her.

The music video is based on the story on how Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan of Karmin met in college. In the video, Amy likes Nick and expects him to call her up, but towards the end it is revealed that Nick is seeing a different woman, leaving Amy confused and truly brokenhearted.

Amy Heidemann:

So we were in the studio with Claude Kelly, who co-wrote some of the songs with us on the album, and he said, ‘You know, Nick and Amy, you need a song about you guys and about your relationship in real life.’ And we were like, ‘Well, that’s boring. Who wants to hear about that?’ And he asked us to tell our story, and we started talking about how we met, and it’s really funny. We met at a party and basically nobody called the other person the next day. It was horrible. Like we were both too proud to call and ask one another out. So we wanted to write a song about that and kind of how vulnerable we felt the next day. So, you know, the next day [thinking], “Why isn’t the other person calling? This is horrible.” And you sort of start over-thinking it. You’re always checking for texts and stuff. I was in the vocal booth singing the chorus and I was like, ‘This is so sad, but there’s something uncomfortable happy about it too.’ That’s where the “cheerio” came from. It just sort of popped out when you’re just like by yourself and second guessing everything and you have to do something to kind of break the tension. So “cheerio” just kind of popped out as a joke like if you were in your room alone totally embarrassing yourself.

Nick Noonan:

‘Brokenhearted’ is kind of based on when we first met. We were in Boston, it was the beginning of our sophomore year. It was at my friends house. We knew of each other but we hadn’t really had a full conversation yet. We ran into each other, we started talking, and we both got along brilliantly, like it was a too good to be true kind of thing. It’s kind of told from Amy’s perspective the next day kind of waiting for me to call.

Amy Heidemann:

But you didn’t call, so I was brokenhearted. I mean, it was crazy, because we came from totally different circles. I was like goody two shoes, he was like a party animal. Jazz, trombone guy. We were shocked that we got along. When he didn’t call the next day I was like, hold on, I always get what I want. What’s going on here.
