Waking Up In Vegas Lyrics

[Verse 1]
You gotta help me out
It's all a blur last night
We need a taxi
'Cause you're hungover and I'm broke

I lost my fake ID
But you lost the motel key
Spare me your freakin'
Dirty looks now, don't blame me

[Pre-Chorus]
You wanna cash out
And get the hell outta town
Don't be a baby, remember what you told me

[Chorus]
Shut up and put your money where your mouth is
That's what you get for wakin' up in Vegas
Get up and shake the glitter off your clothes now
That's what you get for wakin' up in Vegas

[Verse 2]
Why are these lights so bright?
Did we get hitched last night?
Dressed up like Elvis
Why am I wearing your class ring?
[Pre-Chorus]
Don't call your mother
'Cause now we're partners in crime
Don't be a baby, remember what you told me

[Chorus]
Shut up and put your money where your mouth is
That's what you get for wakin' up in Vegas
Get up and shake the glitter off your clothes now
That's what you get for wakin' up in Vegas

[Bridge]
You got me into this
Information overload, situation lost control
Send out an SOS
(Oh) Ha, and get some cash out
(Oh) We're gonna tear up the town
(Oh) No, don't be a baby, remember what you told me

[Break]
Remember what you told me
Remember what you told me, told me, told me
Oh, yeah

[Chorus]
Shut up and put your money where your mouth is
That's what you get for wakin' up in Vegas
Get up and shake the glitter off your clothes now
That's what you get for wakin' up in Vegas
[Outro]
That's what you get, baby
Shake the glitter
Shake, shake, shake the glitter
Give me some cash out, baby
Give me some cash out, baby

Genius Annotation

“Waking Up in Vegas” is a song by Katy Perry, released as the fourth and final single from One of the Boys. The song was born out of a suggestion by co-writer Desmond Child telling Perry they should stop writing “dark and brooding” songs and instead write something “light-hearted and high-spirited … about you and your gay best friend hitting Vegas and losing all your money”.

The song was an international hit, peaking at #9 in the US and reaching the top 40 in several countries overseas in the summer of 2009.

What did Katy Perry say about "Waking Up In Vegas"?
Genius Answer

On the inspiration behind the song coming from a time when she got “fake married”:

We took all the pictures with the minister, with the fake cake, in the fake chapel and got a fake marriage certificate. We went and bought a wedding dress and a suit at a thrift store, and scanned the pictures and the certificate to my family members, my manager at the time [and] totally freaked the s— out of them.”

Co-writer Desmond Child shared:

At the time, Alanis Morissette was a strong inspiration for Katy. That drew us to compose a dark and brooding rock ballad called, “My Last Cry.” Katy, though, was anything but dark and brooding. She was light-hearted and high-spirited … “Why are we writing all this angry stuff?” I asked her. “You aren’t angry. You’re fun. You should be singing about the way you are. Let’s write a song about you and your gay best friend hitting Vegas and losing all your money.”
