The song was born out of a suggestion by co-writer Desmond Child telling Perry they should stop writing “dark and brooding” songs and instead write something “light-hearted and high-spirited … about you and your gay best friend hitting Vegas and losing all your money”.

The song was an international hit, peaking at #9 in the US and reaching the top 40 in several countries overseas in the summer of 2009.

What did Katy Perry say about "Waking Up In Vegas"?

On the inspiration behind the song coming from a time when she got “fake married”:

We took all the pictures with the minister, with the fake cake, in the fake chapel and got a fake marriage certificate. We went and bought a wedding dress and a suit at a thrift store, and scanned the pictures and the certificate to my family members, my manager at the time [and] totally freaked the s— out of them.”

At the time, Alanis Morissette was a strong inspiration for Katy. That drew us to compose a dark and brooding rock ballad called, “My Last Cry.” Katy, though, was anything but dark and brooding. She was light-hearted and high-spirited … “Why are we writing all this angry stuff?” I asked her. “You aren’t angry. You’re fun. You should be singing about the way you are. Let’s write a song about you and your gay best friend hitting Vegas and losing all your money.”
