Robert Norton Noyce (December 12, 1927 – June 3, 1990), nicknamed “the Mayor of Silicon Valley”, co-founded Fairchild Semiconductor in 1957 and Intel Corporation in 1968. He is also credited (along with Jack Kilby) with the invention of the integrated circuit (aka the microchip) which fueled the personal computer revolution and gave Silicon Valley its name

Tom Wolfe wrote a great essay about him called The Tinkerings of Robert Noyce: How the Sun Rose on the Silicon Valley

David Cotter, who invented the metaphor, defined the 4 major properties of “glass ceilings”:

  1. A gender or racial difference that is not explained by other job-relevant characteristics of the employee.
  2. A gender or racial difference that is greater at higher levels of an outcome than at lower levels of an outcome.
  3. A gender or racial inequality in the chances of advancement into higher levels, not merely the proportions of each gender or race currently at those higher levels.
  4. A gender or racial inequality that increases over the course of a career.
