Holy Sonnet Lyrics
Sometimes the subject matter is hard to pass up.
Take Jesus. He was a very secure artist.
He didn’t doubt his talent. He never talked
About it because it was like having blue eyes.
It’s now become established fact, however,
That his eyes were a dark chocolate brown
And that he was perhaps a little gay. Mother
Mary herself would mourn such a thing.
No matter what you believe, please recall
The blood of Christ. At the end of the service,
None of it can be left in the goblet. And all
Of us should be drunk. As a professional,
I can spit-taste one hundred wines in an hour.
But if I’m swallowing, I can taste only ten.
About
Genius Annotation
Metaphysical poet John Donne wrote the first “Holy Sonnets” (19 of them). This sonnet dispenses largely with the rhyme structure of conventional sonnets, but does maintain other aspects: love as topic, 14 lines, closing couplet.
“Holy Sonnet” appears in Yakich’s fourth book of poetry, The Importance of Peeling Potatoes in Ukraine.
