Shed Your Soul Lyrics

I saw God die
I saw God die

We're on our own

Well if all that remains is our avaricious wit
Then an eye for an eye is the only law that can exist

So don't use your romance to soften defeat
And trophies of war to boast of your feat
You've failed and you've failed
Because your body is weak
And you'll never be as strong as you dream to achieve

What if we're wrong?
What if we're not all alone?
What if we're lost?
And we missed the whole point of it all?

I saw God die (I saw God die)
I saw God die (I saw God die)

About

Genius Annotation

The Album “Children of Fire” is a cohesive narrative – telling a story of a Father and Daughter set in an apocalyptic world where both God and the Devil seem to have vanished after God defeated the Devil in The Finisher on their previous album, Son of the Morning.

At the beginning of the story, the Father is a militant religious zealot, and the Daughter is an Atheist.

This song introduces the Daughter character and her militant athiesm. There is a tongue-and-cheek irony to the aggression and fervor with which she outlines her beliefs, tempered by the chorus which asks “What if we’re wrong?” Also, her recognition that “[She] saw God die” seems to allude to a concession that God might exist or might have existed previously.

The Daughter’s journey of faith is a central theme throughout the rest of the album.
