About

Genius Annotation

“Run Like an Antelope” is one of the oldest songs in the Phish catalog, possibly predating the existence of the band itself. The title is related to one of songwriter Trey Anastasio’s high school bands, Space Antelope. The lyrics are credited to two of Anastasio’s high school friends, Steve Pollak (The Dude of Life) and Tom Marshall.

The song’s first known appearance in a live Phish performance came on April 6, 1985. It has been a consistent part of the Phish live repertoire throughout their history, often featured as a set closer.

On December 31, 1993, Anastasio introduced Tom Marshall during “Run Like an Antelope” to sing the “first line that he ever wrote for a Phish song.” Marshall then supplied the “Rye, rye rocco” portion of the lyrics.

The “Set the gearshift” line is credited to Steve Pollak.
