Headlong Flight Lyrics

[Verse 1]
All the journeys of this great adventure
It didn't always feel that way
I wouldn't trade them because I made them
The best I could, and that's enough to say

[Chorus 1]
Some days were dark
I wish that I could live it all again
Some nights were bright
I wish that I could live it all again

[Verse 2]
All the highlights of that headlong flight
Holding on with all my might
To what I felt back then
I wish that I could live it all again

[Chorus 2]
I have stoked the fire on the big steel wheels
Steer the airship right across the stars
I learned to fight, I learned to love, I learned to feel
Oh I wish that I could live it all again

[Verse 3]
All the treasures, the gold, and glory
It didn't always feel that way
I don't regret it – I'll never forget it
I wouldn't trade tomorrow for today
[Chorus 1]
Some days were dark
I wish that I could live it all again
Some nights were bright
I wish that I could live it all again

[Chorus 2]
I have stoked the fire on the big steel wheels
Steer the airship right across the stars
I learned to fight, I learned to love, I learned to feel
Oh I wish that I could live it all again

[Interlude (Spoken)]
The days were dark
And the nights were bright
I would never trade tomorrow for today

[Drum Break]

[Guitar Solo]

[Verse 4]
All the highlights of that headlong flight
Holding on with all my might

[Chorus 1]
Some days were dark
I wish that I could live it all again
Some nights were bright
I wish that I could live it all again
[Chorus 2]
I have stoked the fire on the big steel wheels
Steer the airship right across the stars
I learned to fight, I learned to love, I learned to feel
Oh I wish that I could live it all again

[Chorus 2]
I have stoked the fire on the big steel wheels
Steer the airship right across the stars
I learned to fight, I learned to love, I learned to steal
Oh, I wish that I could…

[Outro]
Oh, I wish that I could live it all again

Genius Answer

Geddy Lee:

This is one of my favourite songs that we’ve written in the last number of years and again it was born out of that jam session that I mentioned earlier from 2011 springtime. We’d constructed an instrumental called “Take That Lampshade Off’n Yo’ Head” and Neil [Peart] had these lyrics for “Headlong Flight”. I loved the way the lyrics talked about our hero looking back over his life and seeing all the good and all the bad things he had done and yet he still came to the conclusion that if he was pushed he would do it all over again. It became a great vessel for us, that song. We had moments that were kind of reminiscent of “Bastille Day” riffs and stuff like that, so because he was looking back over his life, we chose to look back over our musical life like that.
