A topical verse of its time, naming people in the public eye in the 1960s.
As noted on the right, this was first recorded on “The Paul Simon Songbook”. The earlier version contains references to different politicians and celebrities. The S&G recording is flippant. Simon’s original is more angry (and in my opinion, superior).

Nursery rhymes and fairy tales are part of a society’s Oral Tradition. Until they were written down or otherwise recorded, and thereby fossilised, they were embellished by each teller of the tale or rhyme. This may remind you of a genre of music? Of which there are many examples on this very site.
